Make Mail.app Announce New Emails

Using the Growl notification system, you can make your Mac verbally announce what new emails you have. Here is how:

1) Download and install Growl: http://growl.info

2) Then quit Mail and install the GrowlMail plugin (in the “Extras” folder of the Growl mounted disk image).

3) Open Mail, go to preferences -> GrowlMail (preference pane on the far right)

4) Set it to “show every mail individually” and in the Description box, delete everything and enter:

E-mail from %sender, subject, %subject

You can modify this. Note that Growl will not speak what’s in the title box, just the description.

5) Finally, go to System Preferences -> Growl preference pane, check “Start Growl at login”, then under “Display Options” select “speech” from the Default Style pulldown, and close the window.

That’s it. Just in case, make sure your volume is not muted.
